Due to the nature of the environment it was clear that I would have large flat featureless planes. This introduced the issue of tiling.
To combat this I created several decal materials similar to the caustics approach that modify roughness, reflection and normal.
Another approach was to overlay the same texture several times on its self. The material below has been stretched over a kilometer and supports details as small as a few centimeters while still showing some variations from a great distance.
Conclusion – Use both methods depending on situation for best visuals and efficiency.
